Will People Exist Forever In Hell?

Will people exist forever in hell? The answer, according to Scripture, is yes. Human beings will not cease to exist. God created us as eternal beings. In Genesis 1:26, we are made in His image, and nothing in Scripture suggests that unbelievers will eventually be spared from eternal punishment through annihilation.

God does not change, and neither does His Word.

Psalm 89:34 says: “My covenant I will not break, nor alter the word that has gone out of My lips.”

Malachi 3:6 declares: “For I am the Lord, I do not change.”

Hebrews 13:8 affirms: “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.”

If God is unchanging and His Word is eternal, then His declarations regarding judgment must also be eternal.

The Seriousness of Sin

Scripture teaches that sin against God deserves eternal punishment. God gave humanity His very best—He sent His own Son to die in our place on the cross. Yet many scoff at or reject this extraordinary gift of salvation.

We have sinned against a holy, omnipotent, perfect, Almighty God. Consider this comparison: lying to the Supreme Court would carry greater consequences than lying to a neighbor because of the authority of the court. In the same way, sin against an infinite God carries infinite weight. Because God is infinite in being and authority, our sin against Him is of infinite seriousness and therefore deserving of eternal punishment.

Furthermore, time spent in hell could never pay for sin. Human time does not have the value required to satisfy divine justice. Only the shed blood of Jesus Christ has that value. Hebrews 9:22 says: “Without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness.”

Time in hell would imply salvation by works—paying off sin through suffering. But Scripture clearly teaches that salvation is by grace through faith, not by works. Ephesians 2:8–9 states: “For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast.”

Is Hell Eternal

Jesus Himself spoke plainly about the duration of hell.

In Matthew 25:46, He said: “And these will go away into everlasting punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.”

The word translated “everlasting” (aionios) is the same word used to describe both eternal life and eternal punishment. If eternal life is truly everlasting, then so is everlasting punishment. The same word is used in the following passages:

  • Romans 16:26 — “Everlasting God”
  • Second Peter 1:11 — “Everlasting kingdom of our Lord”
  • Revelation 14:6 — “Everlasting gospel”
  • Hebrews 13:20 — “Everlasting covenant”
  • John 6:40 — “Everlasting life”

In Matthew 25:41, Jesus said: “Depart from Me, you cursed, into everlasting fire prepared for the devil and his angels.”

People and the devil are sent into everlasting fire together.

Revelation 20:10 further defines the duration: “And the devil who deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are. And they will be tormented day and night forever and ever.”

This verse describes torment occurring “day and night forever and ever.” The beast and the false prophet were cast into the lake of fire one thousand years earlier (Revelation 19:20), and they are still there, being tormented. This demonstrates ongoing conscious existence.

Revelation 14:10–11 says: “He shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels and in the presence of the Lamb. And the smoke of their torment ascends forever and ever; and they have no rest day nor night.”

To be tormented in His presence requires continued existence. The smoke of their torment ascending forever implies ongoing reality. Having no rest day or night indicates continuous experience—not annihilation.

Continued Existence in Judgment

Other passages also point to continued existence:

Ezekiel 32:21 speaks of the mighty speaking from the midst of hell and bearing their shame. Speech and shame both require conscious existence.

Psalm 49:19 says they “shall never see light,” which presupposes existence in darkness.

Job 15:30 says, “He shall not depart out of darkness,” implying continued captivity.

Isaiah 33:12 refers to “everlasting burnings.” To dwell in everlasting burnings requires existence.

An Eternal Destiny

All human beings are eternal. The question is not whether we will exist forever, but where. Will it be everlasting joy in heaven, or everlasting punishment in hell? That is a decision each person must face.
