How to Get to Heaven

Do you know that God loves you?

Jeremiah 31:3, “I have loved you with an everlasting love

He loves you very deeply and wants to have a relationship with you. You can share your problems with Him because He wants to help you. It doesn’t matter what you have done. He wants to forgive you. He will never leave you.

What has Jesus done for you?

Romans 5:8

But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

John 3:16

For God so loved the world that He gave His only Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.

There is a penalty for our sins. Just as if we break the law in our land, there is a fine, imprisonment or death sentence. The penalty for our sin is spiritual death, which means we will be separated from God and all His goodness for eternity. Jesus Christ paid that penalty of death when He was crucified on the cross and shed His blood for us, but He rose from the dead. No one else died and paid for our sins. Why do I need a Savior?

Romans 3:23

…for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God

John 8:24

… for if you do not believe that I am He, you will die in your sins

We are all born in sin and have a sinful nature. We can’t earn a new nature because we can never be perfect. We would have to be perfect to enter heaven, since Heaven and God are perfect. If we trust in what Jesus did for us on the cross, God considers our trust as if we were perfect. Jesus then died in our place, taking our sins upon His flesh and then washes away our sins with His blood. If we don’t believe He is the Son of God and died for us, then we will die in our sins and spend an eternity in hell. (Jesus speaks on hell – click here)

What must I do to enter Heaven?

Luke 13:3

Jesus said, unless a man repent you shall all likewise perish. (Strong’s Concordance 3340 defines the New Testament word ‘repent’ as:  to change any or all of the elements composing one’s life: attitude, thoughts, behaviors concerning the demands of God for right living.)

Acts 17:30

God commands all men everywhere to repent.

Acts 3:19

Repent therefore and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out.

Ephesians 2:8-9

For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast.

Romans 10:9-10

That if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus, and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.

Acknowledge your sins and ask for forgiveness. Invite Him into your heart and ask Him to be your Lord and Savior. Pray from your heart. Pray this or something similar with your own mouth:

“Dear God in Heaven, I know that I’m a sinner and I cannot save myself. I believe you died for my sins on a cross, but you rose from the dead. Forgive me of all of my sins. Come into my heart. I believe you are the Son of God and shed your blood for me. I ask to be filled with the Holy Spirit Who empowers me to overcome sin, obey Your instructions and now walk in the new life You have for me. I denounce Satan and all his works. I forgive anyone who has ever hurt me. Thank you for saving me and taking me to Heaven. In Jesus name.”

You may or may not feel anything. What matters is that you prayed from your heart with sincerity. Only by faith and with God’s help can we truly forgive. We ask the Lord to help us and to change our feelings. It can be a process.

If you said this prayer, you are now a child of God. It’s important to get a Bible and to start reading it. Start in the New Testament with the book of John. Read it out loud. Pray each day and throughout the day asking the Lord to guide and help you. The Holy Spirit now lives inside of you. Your spirit is now alive to God. He will never leave you. You are now a born again Christian. Find a Bible teaching church and make friends with other believers. Your associations can either encourage you to walk close to God or pull you away from God. It takes time and effort to get to know someone – it’s the same way with God. He is the most exciting, wonderful, loving person you’ll ever know – Jesus! Discover His plan for your life – there is nothing better.
