Why Jesus Was Born

If you were about to take your last breath, and I asked you, “Would you like to go to heaven?” What would you say? Most people would want to go to heaven if they believed it existed. Making the way to heaven and giving us eternal life is why Jesus came.

When it comes to celebrating Christmas, many people just see a holiday for putting up a Christmas tree, getting together with family, giving gifts, enjoying festivities, and perhaps a time to attend church. It does include those activities. However, Christmas is so much more. Many churchgoers don’t understand that if Jesus did not come to the earth to die for our sins, we would all be doomed to an eternity in hell. Thank God He came! Those of us who turn from sin, put our trust in Jesus Christ and receive Him as Lord and Savior can experience eternal life. Sadly, the fact is that most do not repent as Jesus commanded.

Jesus said in Matthew 7:13-14, Enter by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction; and there are many who go in by it. Because narrow is the gate and difficult is the way which leads to life, and there are few who find it.

Only few will enter heaven.

So what does the Bible say? Why was Jesus born?

1 Timothy 1:15, Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners.

1 John 4:14, The Father has sent the Son as Savior of the world.

1 John 3:8, But the Son of God came to destroy the works of the devil.

But why do we need saving?

First, the Bible tells us that we are all born in sin, we continue to sin, and we can never be good enough to earn our way to heaven.

Psalms 51:5, For I was born a sinner—yes, from the moment my mother conceived me.

1 John 3:5, He was manifested to take away our sins.

Romans 3:23, For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.

And what does our sin produce?

Romans 6:23, For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life inChrist Jesus our Lord.

That verse just told us that our sin earns us eternal death. God created us as eternal beings. If a person rejects Jesus they will still exist but void of life and all good. Every good thing comes from God, as James 1:17 states.

If a person doesn’t want God in their life, then they won’t experience God or anything good in the afterlife. Their eternal existence will be filled with pain and agony.

What happens to a person who rejects God and refuses to believe?

John 3:36, He who believes in the Son has everlasting life; and he who does not believe the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him.

Matthew 25:46, And these will go away into everlasting punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.

Matthew 13:49, So it will be at the end of the age. The angels will come forth, separate the wicked from among the just, and cast them into the furnace of fire. There will be wailing and gnashing of teeth.

Repentance is required.

Acts 3:19, Repent therefore and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out.

Acts 26:20, All must repent of their sins and turn to God.

When we ask for forgiveness, God can only forgive us because Jesus shed His blood on the cross as payment for our sins. Nothing else is valuable enough to pay for sins.

1 John 1:7, The blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin.

Colossians 1:14, In whom we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins.

Without Jesus, our heart and spirit are dead to God. Our old fallen nature is not compatible with God’s holy nature. We must receive a new nature.

Ezekiel 36:26, I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; I will take the heart of stone out of your flesh and give you a heart of flesh.

This is the reason why we as Christians must share the truth with those who have not turned to Christ. These people either willfully reject Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, or they’ve never clearly been presented the truth about Jesus, or they are deceived. Either way, they are headed for eternal fire.

Revelation 12:9 speaks of Satan, who deceives the whole world.

In John 14:6 Jesus said, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.

There is no other way to enter heaven.

The reason we should believe Jesus over all the other religious leaders is the fact that He is the only one who died for our sins and then rose from the dead.

No one else claimed to be God, die in our place, and then rose from the dead.

Romans 5:8 says, But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

1 John 3:16, By this we know love, because He laid down His life for us.

Christmas is so much more than trees and gifts, and enjoying time with friends and family. So many are missing the true and real reason for this special day.

May we honor the name of Jesus Christ this Christmas, and celebrate with HIM as our focus. May we always be thankful that He came, suffered, and died in our place paying the penalty for our sin, and that He rose from the dead. He did all this to save us from an eternal hell, and to give every person the opportunity to become part of His eternal family.
