Why Christians Must Know About Hell

I want to talk to you today about why it’s important for us as Christians to understand the severity of hell. When you understand it’s severity, you’ll be much more appreciative of your own salvation…from what you were saved from. It will also cause you to walk more in the fear of the Lord. The fear of the Lord means you respect God enough to read His word daily and obey it!

Another reason you must know about hell is that it give you more of a passion for the lost, and a desire to want to witness. Bill Bright said of most Christians only 2% even bother to witness yet God has called us all to be a witness for Him. When you understand how severe hell is you’ll think, “Man, I didn’t know it was this bad. I didn’t realize it. I have got to pray more diligently for my family.”

In 2 Corinthians 5:10-11 Paul said, “Knowing therefore the terror of the Lord, we persuade men.” Even though that scripture is talking about the judgment seat (the reward seat for Christians) most of the commentaries agree, he was also talking about judgment and hell in general. When you understand how severe hell is, you’ll be more persuasive with men. You’ll take more effort. You won’t pray just a nice, sweet, little prayer for your family or friends. You’ll get on your knees. You’ll cry out and say, “O God, send laborers across their path. Father, send people that they would respect. Give them a dream or a vision. Chase them down Lord, and don’t let them go. I cannot let my family go to hell. Father, don’t let them go.” You’ll pray more passionately when you understand how severe hell is because you will think, “I just didn’t know it was that bad.”

Because hell is so severe, you wouldn’t want your worst enemy to go there so you will take that effort to witness. And that’s God’s heart. He doesn’t want anybody to go to hell. He wants us all to go to heaven. But He gives man a free will to choose, and He gives us the opportunity to share the gospel with a lost and dying world. We carry the words of life that we can share with them, so they can change their whole eternity. I just encourage you, as a Christian, to have more of God’s heart, and His passion, and to go out there and witness because we don’t have a lot of time.
