There Is No Peace In Hell
Most of us experience some level of peace in this life here on Earth. In fact, people will go to great lengths trying to find peace. But when a person dies without Jesus Christ, they will exist in a place called hell. Hell is absent of any peace, and it’s for all eternity.
Lamentations 3:17
“And thou hast removed my soul far off from peace.”
Isaiah 57:21
“There is no peace, saith my God, to the wicked.”
To have no peace is to have no rest. After a short time, a person becomes irritable and frustrated. Without peace, a person’s mind is tormented. In hell, there is never any rest from the torments, the screams, the fear, the thirst, the lack of breath, no sleep, the stench, the heat, the isolation from people, and the hopelessness.
Revelation 14:10–11
“He shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels, and in the presence of the Lamb: And the smoke of their torment ascendeth up forever and ever: and they have no rest day nor night.”
Isaiah 57:20
“But the wicked are like the troubled sea, when it cannot rest.”
In hell, I desperately wanted to talk to a human being. Any human interaction about the suffering we shared would have brought even a fraction of peace. However, I knew I would never have that opportunity.
You are alone and isolated from any kind of fellowship, conversation, or human connection.
It is extremely difficult to process the thought of knowing you will never be able to relate with anyone ever again. Instead, you are exposed to and tormented by hideous creatures. No matter who you were—whether famous or of great influence—it doesn’t matter. You are truly alone amidst a sea of tormented souls.
Ezekiel 7:25
“Destruction cometh; and they shall seek peace, and there shall be none.”
Job 31:23
“For destruction from God was a terror to me… I could not endure.”
Psalm 73:18–19
“You cast them down into destruction. How are they brought into desolation, as in a moment! They are utterly consumed with terrors.”
Terror and fear are the opposite of peace. We may not realize it, but a person can never fully experience peace of mind without knowing the Lord Jesus Christ. Peace comes from God.
1 Timothy 1:2
“Peace, from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.”
Jesus said in:
John 14:27
“Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.”
I’ve shared this true account before, but it comes to mind again:
Our neighbor was a tough Marine, and never feared anything his whole life. He was also a strong atheist. My wife and I found out that he was in the hospital, dying. We went to see him, and as we came into the room, he had a terrified look on his face. He told us that he had been slipping out of his body the night before, and he was going down a dark tunnel. He said it was so very dark, and he was absolutely terrified. The look on his face was one of deep concern and fear.
We explained that he was terrified because he was headed for hell. He said, “I know, and how can I stay out? I just cannot go there.” We explained that the way of salvation is to ask forgiveness for your sins, and to ask Jesus, the Son of God, to come into your heart and receive Him as your Lord and Savior. He said a prayer with us, inviting Jesus into his heart, and it was a prayer with tears. He was most sincere, and thanked us profusely. A genuine peace came over him, and now he appeared relaxed and unafraid. True peace only comes through Jesus Christ.
People may experience some level of peace in this life, but there always remains an unsettled feeling of some kind—which is a lack of peace. They may fear a lack of security, a fear of the future, a concern for their health, a fear of loss, a fear of their child experiencing harm, even a fear of success. And, of course, there is always the fear of death.
And if you haven’t put your faith in the Lord Jesus Christ for your salvation, you should fear death and an eternity in hell.
If you want real peace—now in this life, and in the world to come—turn to the Lord Jesus Christ today. Jesus died, was buried, and rose from the dead to give us all eternal life. But heaven is not your default destination. It takes a purposeful act on your part.
Are you really ready to face your Creator? One second after you die, it’s too late.
