The Only Thing Worse Than Death
The only thing worse than dying is the nightmare of waking up after death to discover hell is a real place. It’s realizing when it’s too late that you failed to spiritually prepare for the afterlife. If you procrastinate, and sudden death knocks on your door, it will be too late. The torment you face in hell will be far worse than death.
Many people tend to think severe suffering, emotional trauma, or major cognitive decline would be worse than dying. And it is terrible to suffer like that, but there is something much worse. It depends upon whether you are prepared to die.
Now, for those who have some assets, they will tend to think their only preparation is creating a will, a Trust, instructions to loved ones and saying their goodbyes. And, of course, that is a wise thing to do.
In addition, sadly, most people spend more time preparing for a short vacation than they do their eternity. And yet a large majority of people believe in life after death.
A May 6, 2025, Pew Research survey, titled “Believing in Spirits and Life After Death Is Common Around the World” states that “In the U.S. 70% of adults say there is definitely or probably life after death.”
(By comparison, their 2023, 2024 study found that 67% of Americans report believing in heaven, and 55% say they believe in hell.
It also stated that, “In most of the countries surveyed, a majority of adults say there is definitely or probably life after death. For example, 85% of adults in Muslim-majority Indonesia say this, as do 80% of adults in Christian-majority Kenya. And across the six Latin American countries surveyed, about two-thirds of adults believe there is an afterlife.”
However, what you believe matters. There are many religious beliefs out there, but only Christianity claims resurrection for its founder.
Jesus warned us that there is something worse than physical death.
In Matthew 18:6, Jesus said, “But whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in Me to sin, it would be better for him if a millstone were hung around his neck, and he were drowned in the depth of the sea.”
In Mark 9:43, He said, “If your hand causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to enter into life maimed, rather than having two hands, to go to hell, into the fire that shall never be quenched.”
In Matthew 13:42, Jesus warns us that people will be separated into two groups and exist after death. He said, those who reject Him will be “cast into the furnace of fire and there will be wailing and gnashing of teeth.”
In Matthew 25:46, Jesus again mentions two states of existence, “And these will go away into everlasting punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.” He just said you will exist forever in either heaven or hell.
In John 14:6, Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.”
Acts 4:12 tells us, “Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.”
There is only one name and one way to gain entrance into heaven and avoid eternity in hell. You must call on the Lord Jesus Christ to forgive and save you.
The wise person prepares ahead of time.
