The Cell

In the vision God gave me of hell, I saw prison cells. They were more like dungeons than cells. The one I found myself in was smoke-filled, filthy and dirty, and unbearably hot. It had rough, stone walls and there were bars on the door. I felt as though I was in a temporary holding cell. The Bible speaks of prison-like details regarding hell.

  • Isaiah 24:22, And they shall be gathered together, as prisoners are gathered in the pit, and shall be shut up in the prison.
  • Proverbs 7:27 refers to the “chambers” of death in hell. Chambers means inner rooms.
  • Job 17:16, They shall go down to the bars of the pit.
  • Jonah 2:2,6, In hell I cried out…The earth with her bars was about me forever.

At first, there were two enormous beasts in this cell. I realized they were demons. At one point I was able to crawl out of the cell. I looked off to my right and could faintly see flames from afar off that dimly lit the skyline. I knew the flames were coming from a large pit, a gigantic raging inferno approximately one mile in diameter and about ten miles away. This was just one of the many things I simply knew. My senses were keener.

In One Minute After You Die, Dr. Erwin W. Lutzer says that those in Sheol (hell) have “heightened perception and a better understanding” (page 39).

One of those demonic creatures grabbed me and carried me back into the cell. It threw me on the stone floor. There were two more demons that entered the cell. The cell was approximately 10 by 15 feet in size.

We know that spending years in an earthly prison is extremely difficult and unbearable for some. Can you imagine being locked up for all eternity? To have no relief, no escape, no reprieve is unthinkable. In addition, the prison cells in hell are not like those in America. They are filthy, smoke-filled, rock enclosed dungeons. There is no light, and no bed to lie in. There is just stone, heat, smoke and terror.

Speaking of prison cells, I want to share a very touching and relevant story.

I was invited to speak at a church in a very rural area. There were no stores, no hotels, no restaurants, and my wife and I arrived late at night. The next day, we arrived at the church and to our surprise there were 250 people who came from all around! At the end of the service, I called people forward who wanted to turn from their sin and ask Jesus into their heart.

Afterward, at the back of the church, a 20 year-old man came up to us with tears in his eyes. He proceeded to tell us his story.

He said that about a year earlier, someone had given him my book, 23 Minutes in Hell. He threw it in the trash since he was not a Christian. A year later, this very night, he was driving past the Church at five minutes to seven in the evening. He saw the billboard that read, Bill Wiese, 23 Minutes in Hell at 7:00 PM. He remembered my name from the book and thought to himself, “What is he doing way out here in the middle of nowhere?” He decided to stop since the service was about to start. At the end he said he asked Jesus to forgive him, with all sincerity.

We asked him, “why are you weeping so heavily?” He said he was driving by the church and was planning to run his car off of a cliff nearby. He was going to commit suicide. He said that he had just killed someone and he knew he was going to jail. He said it was an accident, but never the less, it still resulted in a death.

He said that when I talked about prison cells in hell, he realized he would rather go to prison for some years on earth, than not repent, and spend an eternity in a prison cell in hell. He decided he would turn himself in to the authorities since he was now a Christian.

This gripped our soul! What was the chance of him driving by five minutes before I would speak? What was the chance someone would give him my book, and that he would remember my name? What was the chance that he would look up at the sign and read it while driving, being in such despair? And of course, what was the chance that hearing about the prison cells in hell would cause him to realize he would rather spend time here on earth in prison temporarily than in an eternal prison?

All this orchestration was not by chance. It was God arranging circumstances for this young man to be spared from suicide, to make things right, and to avoid an eternity in hell. God is long-suffering, and will go to great lengths to help steer a person on the right path.

I hope you will make the right decision regarding your eternity. Turning from our sin and receiving Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior is the only way to avoid hell. My sincere hope is that you won’t experience one of these dungeons for yourself.

Franklin Graham said, “Hell is going to be eternity filled with
grief and pain, an unquenchable fire, according to the Bible.”

Think about this while you have the opportunity.
