The Air In Hell

Have you ever felt like you couldn’t breathe? It’s a horrible feeling.

During my 23 Minutes in Hell experience, I remember trying to breathe in hell. The oxygen-depleted atmosphere is full of smoke and a deathly, decaying odor. I’m uncertain if the fire in hell sucks up any air, but I could hardly breathe.

I remember one particular time I went out surfing when I was young. The waves were huge, about 20 feet, and I remember being held down under the water. When you’re being tossed around, you get disoriented and don’t know which way is up. A panic starts setting in when you’re almost out of air. I finally popped up on the surface and was so relieved for that first breath. It felt so good.

However, in hell, the lack of oxygen left me gasping for any little bit of air I could inhale. Maybe only an asthma patient or a firefighter can relate to this. There was no humidity or moisture in the air, and it was exhausting even to try to get just one breath.

Isaiah 42:5 says, “The Lord gives breath to the people upon the earth.”

You are not upon the earth, but down deep beneath the earth’s surface. God is very specific with His Word. In addition, my mouth was so dry. I was extremely thirsty, just as the rich man in hell Jesus told us of in Luke 16.

Some of you may have experienced smoke-filled air escaping from a wildfire. Being subjected to strong, oppressive chemical odors or smoke is difficult to endure on the earth. After only a short time, your lungs and mucous membranes begin to feel inflamed, and your body feels sick. Breathing oxygen-filled air is something most of us take for granted. Most people alive on the earth don’t even think to thank God for their very breath.

Job 33:4 says, “The breath of the Almighty gives me life.”

Acts 17:25 says, “He gives to all life, breath, and all things.”

Psalm 33:5 says, “The earth is full of the goodness of the Lord.”

We don’t realize that every good thing we experience in this life comes from God. Even air to breathe. When God removes Himself from the situation, all the good goes with Him. All of God’s goodness and His attributes are completely removed from hell. That is why hell is so horrible. All good comes from God, as James 1:17 states.

After death, your spirit and soul will live forever in one of two places: either complete bliss in heaven or complete horror in hell. The worst part of hell is not the struggle to breathe but knowing you will never escape the torments. One hundred million years will go by, and it’s only day one for a person in hell.

James 4:14 says, “Life is but a vapor.”

Psalm 144:4 says, “Man is like a breath; His days are like a passing shadow.”

This life on earth is very short, yet we are eternal beings. We will spend our eternity in one place or the other.

Don’t delay, ignore, or reject the opportunity to receive Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior right now. The enemy will tell your mind, “You can think about this tomorrow.” You might not have tomorrow. Call out to Jesus and receive His forgiveness today.
