Money Can’t Save You From Hell
Many people love money. They will kill, steal, and destroy to obtain it. It is interesting that in John 10:10, Jesus told us that Satan is the one who steals, kills, and destroys.
1 Timothy 6:9–10 says, “But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and harmful lusts which drown people in destruction and perdition. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, for which some have strayed from the faith in their greediness, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.”
Now, money itself is neutral. It is a tool and can be used for either good or evil. Money gives you options in this life, but it will not save you from hell. In fact, the love of money has led many down that wide road leading to destruction. Sadly, many people who possess a lot of money have no interest in God, do not see their need for Him, and even mock Him. Their money gives them a sense of security in this earthly life, and they can buy their way out of many problems.
But once they die, it is too late. If money is first place in your life, it has become your god, and it will not save you.
Jesus said in Mark 10:22–24, “How hard it is for those who have riches to enter the kingdom of God!” The disciples were astonished at His words. But Jesus answered again and said to them, “Children, how hard it is for those who trust in riches to enter the kingdom of God! It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God.” We see that Jesus said these people are very difficult to reach. But He also said, “With men it is impossible, but not with God; for with God all things are possible.”
1 Timothy 6:17 says, “Command those who are rich in this present age not to be haughty, nor to trust in uncertain riches but in the living God, who gives us richly all things to enjoy.”
Clearly, a person can be wealthy and still trust in Jesus Christ for salvation. The Lord desires that godly people have resources so they can use them to promote the Gospel and help others. The issue is that God cannot trust most people with money because they may be tempted to stray and indulge in the lusts and pleasures of this world. They may begin to ignore the Lord and His work.
There is nothing wrong with a Christian having a great deal of money, as long as it was not gained through stealing, corruption, or deceit, and as long as it does not take first place in life or detract from one’s relationship with God. Prosperity can destroy those who are not fully committed to the Lord.
Many seek wealth as the most important thing to acquire. But consider what Jesus said in Matthew 16:26: “For what profit is it to a person if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? Or what will a person give in exchange for his soul?”
Psalm 49:6–7 says, “Those who trust in their wealth and boast in the multitude of their riches, none of them can by any means redeem his brother, nor give to God a ransom for him.” Verses 8–9 continue, explaining that a soul is far too precious to be ransomed by earthly wealth. There is not enough wealth in all the earth to buy eternal life for even one soul.
Zephaniah 1:18 says, “Neither their silver nor their gold shall be able to deliver them in the day of the Lord’s wrath.”
The deceitfulness of riches is further described in Proverbs 18:11: “The rich man’s wealth is his strong city, and like a high wall in his own imagination.” He relies on his wealth for security and becomes arrogant because of it.
I once shared the message of faith with the owner of a large construction company who trusted completely in his money. His confidence was rooted in his wealth rather than in God.
Money is temporary, and it will not help you after you die.
Proverbs 23:5 says, “Will you set your eyes on that which is not? For riches certainly make themselves wings; they fly away like an eagle toward heaven.”
Proverbs 11:4 adds, “Riches do not profit in the day of wrath, but righteousness delivers from death.”
Proverbs 11:28 says, “He who trusts in his riches will fall, but the righteous will flourish like a branch.”
Proverbs 27:24 reminds us, “For riches are not forever, nor does a crown endure to every generation.”
Only the blood of Jesus paid for sin. No charitable deeds done with money can purchase entrance into heaven. Good works will not earn a place in God’s kingdom. Trusting in the Lord Jesus Christ alone to forgive and save is the only way to eternal life.
Matthew 26:28 records Jesus’ words: “For this is My blood of the new covenant, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.”
