Is The Soul Eternal?

Yes it is. Genesis 1:26 says we are made in God’s image, after His likeness. God is eternal; therefore, human souls are eternal as well.

Annihilationists believe that unbelievers are not eternal and that only those who repent and receive Jesus Christ will live forever. They teach that those who are not saved are annihilated, or destroyed, at death.

However, Scripture provides many passages that indicate the soul of the unsaved continues to exist.

Psalm 26:9 — “Gather not my soul with sinners.”
(To be gathered with sinners indicates their existence after death.)

Psalm 86:13 — “You have delivered my soul from the lowest hell.”
(To be delivered, one would have to exist.)

Proverbs 9:18 — “Her guests are in the depths of hell.”
(There cannot be guests if no one is there.)

Isaiah 38:17 — “You have lovingly delivered my soul from the pit of corruption.”
(To be delivered, one would have to exist there.)

Psalm 28:1 — “If You are silent to me, I become like those who go down to the pit.”
(God does not speak to those in hell, yet they still exist.)

Proverbs 15:24 — “The way of life winds upward for the wise, that he may turn away from hell below.”
(There would be no need to turn away from hell if it did not exist.)

Psalm 9:15 — “The nations have sunk down in the pit.”

Psalm 63:9 — “Those who seek my life, to destroy it, shall go into the lower parts of the earth.”
(Why go there if they cease to exist?)

Ezekiel 32:21 — “The strong among the mighty shall speak to him out of the midst of hell.” Assyria is there with her company… their graves set in the recesses of the pit… in the lower parts of the earth… bearing their shame with those who go down to the pit… who have gone down to hell.
(They speak, bear shame, and are surrounded by others—this indicates continued existence.)

Revelation 14:10–11 — “He shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels and in the presence of the Lamb. And the smoke of their torment ascends forever and ever; and they have no rest day nor night.”
(To experience torment, to have smoke ascend forever, and to have no rest day or night all indicate ongoing existence.)

As these Scriptures show, the doctrine of annihilation is mistaken. The soul continues to exist in one place or another.

Are you willing to risk your most valuable possession—your soul—based solely on personal opinion? Or will you believe the Word of God?
