I Experienced The Horror Of Hell
When I was returning from hell in the vision God had given me, I was traveling back with the Lord. Of course, I had no fear whatsoever and experienced an overwhelming sense of love, peace, and safety with Jesus (John 14:27; 1 John 4:16).
During this vision, I was outside of my physical body and in my spirit body (1 Corinthians 15:44). As we returned to our home, I could see through the roof, and I saw my body lying on the floor. It was very strange, to say the least. I thought, “That is not the real me. This is the real me—my spirit body.”
The physical body appeared so temporal, while our spirit body is eternal. My physical body looked like how your car would appear to you—it’s not you, but just a vehicle to get you around in life. Jesus then placed me back into my body. The moment I re-entered it, the memories of hell flooded my mind with absolute terror. I started screaming, lying there on the living room floor in a traumatized state.
I’m sure you’ve heard of someone going into trauma after a war or suffering severe shock after a car accident. Well, hell is far worse than any horror you could experience on earth. My cries woke up my wife. She found me rolling on the floor. I cried out, “Pray for me! Jesus has taken me to hell!” She said she had never seen me like this, as I am normally a reserved and calm person.
Then, when I calmed down, the first thing I did was ask her for a glass of water. I remember thinking how beautiful the water looked. You see, there was no life of any kind in hell. Everything there is dead, dry, barren, and desolate (Isaiah 29:2). Revelation 21:6 equates water with life. To see life in a glass of water was remarkable—and absolutely beautiful. We are now water-aholics!
Your mind can’t conceive the total horror and hopelessness of hell. With the memories and mental images of hell still fresh in my mind, I felt certain I would die from fright. Only God could relieve me of the trauma. As we prayed, God removed the trauma but left the memories. Only He can do such a thing.
There are many others who have either had a vision of hell or were on their deathbeds and received a glimpse of it. Each one of them experienced complete terror—beyond description. Here are some of their accounts:
Thomas Welch (1924, Oregon)
A man who worked at a sawmill in Oregon fell off a timber and was underwater for at least forty-five minutes. He was found dead. His name was Thomas Welch. He said:
“I landed on my head on the first beam, thirty feet down… I fell into the water and disappeared from view… The search went on for forty-five minutes to an hour before I was found by Mr. J. H. Gunderson… I was dead as far as this world is concerned, but I was alive in another world… The next thing I knew, I was standing near the shoreline of a great ocean of fire.
It appeared to be what the Bible describes in Revelation 21:8, ‘The lake which burns with fire and brimstone.’ This was the most awesome sight one could ever see this side of the final judgment… I was standing some distance from the burning, turbulent, rolling mass of blue fire. As far as my eyes could see, it was just the same.
I saw other people I had known who had died. We recognized each other. Their expressions were those of bewilderment and confusion. The scene was so awesome that words simply fail… There is no way of escape except by Divine intervention. I said to myself audibly, ‘If I had known about this, I would have done anything required to escape coming to a place like this.’
I saw another man walking in front of us. I knew immediately who it was. He had a strong, kind, compassionate face—composed and unafraid. Master of all… It was Jesus Himself.
I said again to myself, ‘If He would only look my way and see me, He could rescue me from this place.’ He turned His head and looked directly at me. That’s all it took. His look was enough. In seconds, I was back, re-entering my body…
I thank God for people who can pray. It was Mrs. Brocke I heard praying for me. She said, ‘O God, don’t take Tom. He is not saved.’”
Seeing hell caused him to become a Christian, study for the ministry, and serve God for the remainder of his years. He served with people such as Gordon Lindsay.
Dr. Richard Eby
Dr. Richard Eby, who had previously died and seen heaven, was later given a vision of hell. He shared:
“I was being taken to the lowest bowels of the earth… A sense of absolute terror gripped my being… In the depths of the earth, my isolation was terrifying. I would never see another person.
I heard demons taunt me… And the smell! Horrid, nasty, stale, fetid, rotten, evil… Stinking, crawling demons were mentally seen, delighting in making me wretched.
I would now have an eternity of inescapable nausea, beside all the rest of hell. My terror mounted until I was ready to collapse into utter hopelessness, crushing despair, and loneliness.
I was an eternally lost soul—by my own choosing…”
John Bunyan (1628–1688)
John Bunyan, the well-known author of The Pilgrim’s Progress and a respected preacher in Bedford, England, also had a vision of hell. In his book Visions of Heaven and Hell, he wrote:
“We were soon surrounded with a darkness much blacker than night. It was attended with a stench more suffocating by far than that of burning brimstone.
Likewise, my ears were filled with horrid yellings of the damned spirits…
Now we were within hell’s territories, placed in the caverns of the infernal deep.”
There are many other true accounts from those who saw hell, and each one was terrified.
Here are a few more Bible verses to put the fear of God in you:
Thank God for Jesus, who died on the cross and shed His blood or our sin. He took our place and paid the price of death for us—otherwise, we would all end up in hell.
As Christians, we are entrusted with sharing the gospel. We must have a compassionate heart and warn others about how to avoid hell.
2 Corinthians 5:10–11 – “Knowing therefore the terror of the Lord, we persuade men.”
Paul said that because he understood the terror of God’s judgment and the reality of hell, he preached with conviction—trying to persuade people to receive salvation.
Colossians 1:27–28 – “Christ in you, the hope of glory. Whom we preach, warning every man…”
Again, we are to warn every person of the danger of hell.
Only Jesus could pay for our sins because He lived a perfect, sinless life. He died in our place, was buried, and then rose from the dead. Now, we can live forever with Him—if we turn from our sins and receive Him as our Lord and Savior.
We are eternally grateful to Him.
Matthew 25:46 – “And these will go away into everlasting punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.”
You can choose to experience the horrors of hell forever—or eternal peace, comfort, joy, and safety in heaven.
