Hell Experiences
God gave me a vision of hell back in November of 1998. There are many other people who have had a glimpse of hell, who were on their deathbed, or had a dream or vision from God. My wife and I have met them and share their true stories in this video
1. Jerry R. Newberry.
I talked with Jerry personally. He called me on the phone after seeing me interviewed on a Christian television program. When he was fifteen years old, he nearly died of appendicitis. He said that after the surgery:
“The lights above my bed just slowly went out. Suddenly, a dim haze appeared and I could see a tunnel! I could hear, in the distance, people moaning and groaning and wailing. I was very frightened.
At that time two hooded beings appeared, one on either side… I had never heard wailing of that magnitude. It was a horrible sound. The other thing that was so bad was the smell. It was like many things burning together. My eyes burned, my nostrils burned, and my lungs burned. We walked into the corridors and there were countless people behind huge metal bars… Imagine a place so hot it is unbearable, with total hopelessness and despair. I saw thousands—countless thousands—of people behind those massive metal bars… I thought I could not stand the odor… (at this time I was not a Christian). I heard a voice with a sound of total command and authority say, ‘He has to go back.’ We made an about-face… I opened my eyes and the light seemed so bright. I slowly looked around. My mother and siblings were all standing at my bedside… I knew I would never be the same again. The very first Sunday I was able, I went to church. At the beginning of the altar call, I went to the altar and gave my heart to Jesus Christ, my King of kings and Lord of lords.”
This experience happened in 1946, but he didn’t write about it until 2006. He never forgot his horrific experience.
2. Dr. Maurice Rawlings on Sir Francis Newport.
Dr. Rawlings shares a story about Sir Francis Newport, who was on his deathbed and said, “‘Why have I become a skeleton in three or four days? See now, then. I have despised my Maker and denied my Redeemer. I have joined myself to the atheist and profane, and continued this course under many convictions… when my security was the greatest and the checks of my conscience were the least.’”
In inexpressible horror, he cried out, “‘Oh, the insufferable pangs of Hell!’”
And then he died at once.
3. Two Hospital Cases (via Dr. Rawlings).
In Memorial Hospital in Chattanooga, a story was collected by Mary Ann Hickman and assistant head nurse Dotty Gilbert. They reported that a 62-year-old man suffering an acute heart attack had to be restrained. He said, “There are demons coming after me.” Fighting the staff, writhing, and kicking off the creatures… After the cardiac arrest rhythm was corrected by electric shock, the demons seemed to follow him into the intensive care unit, where, regaining consciousness, they pounced on him again. A review of medical records showed no medications that could account for the demonization.
In the same week and emergency room, charge nurse Nancy Humphries and Ruby Tinney reported a 38-year-old heart attack victim who, with bloodcurdling screams, kept yelling, “I’m in hell! Call a pastor!”
4. Napoleon Bonaparte’s Deathbed Confession.
Dr. Rawlings also quotes Napoleon Bonaparte, who in 1821 confessed to Count de Montholon, “Such is the fate of him who has been called the great Napoleon! What an abyss between my deep misery and the eternal kingdom of Christ.”
5. Voltaire’s Last Words.
Dr. Rawlings shares about Voltaire, the philosopher and infidel. For two months he was tortured with agony. He would gnash his teeth in impotent rage against God and man. Then, turning his face, he would cry, “I must die—abandoned of God and of men!” Even his nurse said repeatedly: “For all the wealth of Europe, I would never see another infidel die.”
6. Mickey Robinson.
My wife and I met Mickey Robinson, a former atheist. He wrote a book about his near-death experience. He was an expert parachutist until one day, his plane crashed. He suffered third-degree burns over three-quarters of his body and was near death. He said:
“I began traveling toward a pure white light, brighter than a thousand suns… But then, I became aware of something moving in behind me. I felt an eerie blackness hovering… It was total emptiness, terrifying, trying to swallow all that made me alive. I experienced an agony worse than being burned alive. I knew if the darkness swallowed me, I would be imprisoned in an empty world—no windows, no door, no help. And this aloneness would be final, non-negotiable, never-ending. Then, like a drowning man gasping for air, my spirit screamed out: ‘God, I’m sorry! I want to live! Please give me another chance!’ And just as those words escaped my lips, I found myself standing in heaven… A living, breathing glory enfolded me… and though I saw no form, I knew it was a Person. This Presence was all Power, all Wisdom, all Splendor, all Love…Nothing mattered except to remain in this Presence. Love drenched me like a flood…”
He became a Christian and went into ministry.
7. B. W. Melvin.
We also met B. W. Melvin, a former atheist. He drank polluted water and contracted Vibrio Cholerae, which caused his death. He ended up in hell.
He said, “I suddenly left my body, floated through the ceiling, and began going down a tunnel of extreme darkness. I saw unspeakable horror, smelled a stench more putrid than imaginable, heard intense screams, and saw flames. I saw demons tormenting people in cages. I was terrified and felt hopelessly lost forever.
Then the Lord came and took me out of that horrid place. A friend later found me, and I came back to life.
I was hospitalized, recovered, became a Christian, and now share my experience around the country.”
Most of those who have seen hell became Christians and later ministers, preaching the Gospel.
8. John Bunyan.
John Bunyan (b. 1628), author of The Pilgrim’s Progress, also wrote Visions of Heaven and Hell. He describes an angel who said, “Fear not, for I am sent to show you things you have not seen.” “I found myself far above the earth… The angel said, “Death does not enter this blessed place. Neither sin nor sorrow are here, for it is the glory of this happy place to be forever freed from evil.” He was also shown hell:
“We were surrounded with darkness, blacker than night, and a stench worse than burning brimstone.
My ears were filled with horrid yelling of damned spirits. We saw two souls tormented by a fiend, plunged in liquid fire and brimstone. One woman had flaming sulfur forced down her throat. Another soul lay on a bed of burning steel, choking on brimstone. He cried, ‘How often was I urged to leave my path of sin! Salvation was offered to me a thousand times, yet I refused it… O cursed sin that bewitches mankind to eternal ruin!’”
Another soul said, “We have lost the presence of God… the company of saints and angels… we have nothing but tormenting devils.”
Final Thoughts
If you don’t believe these people—or the thousands of others who have seen hell—or the 23 authors in the Bible who wrote of hell, then at least believe Jesus, who warned us about hell in 46 different verses. You may wonder about people who see a bright light during near-death experiences—many of whom were not Christians, and some were atheists. They assume the light means they’re going to heaven.
However, it may be that:
- Everyone initially heads toward the light of God, but once they reach it, some are redirected into the tunnel of darkness.
- Others may be seeing Satan, as described in 2 Corinthians 11:14, “And no wonder! For Satan himself transforms himself into an angel of light.”
Scripture suggests that everyone’s spirit returns to God initially—but then those who don’t know Jesus are redirected:
- Ecclesiastes 12:7 — “Then the dust will return to the earth as it was, and the spirit will return to God who gave it.”
- Ecclesiastes 3:21 — “Who knows the spirit of the sons of men, which goes upward…”
- 2 Peter 2:17 — “For whom is reserved the blackness of darkness forever.”
My questions to you is, “will you be directed downward into darkness?”
