Good vs. Evil
Good vs. Evil
Isaiah 5:20 states, “Woe to those who call evil good, and good evil.”
In our world today, many have no absolute standard for truth in their lives. They are blinded by the information coming through social media and the news, so they don’t even recognize evil from good! Hebrews 5:14 tells believers that we are to grow up spiritually so we CAN discern both good and evil.
What does God say about evil?
Jesus clearly tells us where evil originates in Mark 7:21-23:
“Out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders, thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lewdness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness.
All these evil things come from within and defile (or pollute) a man.”
Jesus says evil comes from a person’s heart…not from our country’s systems and ideals. Change that is godly and good is ONLY possible when people turn from sin and turn to Jesus Christ.
Proverbs 6 lists seven things God hates, which are exceptionally evil to Him:
- A proud look
- A lying tongue
- Hands that shed innocent blood
- A heart that devises wicked plans
- Feet that are swift in running to evil
- A false witness who speaks lies
- One who sows discord among brethren
James 3:16 says that where envying and strife is, there is confusion and EVERY evil work.
2 Timothy 3:1-3 states, “In the last days perilous times will come: For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, unloving, unforgiving, slanderers, without self-control, brutal, and despisers of good.”
It is interesting that the word “unthankful” is in this list.
In Luke 6:35, Jesus speaks of God being kind to the unthankful and evil. Again, notice how He places being unthankful with evil.
God’s word also mentions evil thoughts, evil words, evil deeds, evil disease, evil associations, evil conscience, evil gain, an evil heart of unbelief, and evil teaching. The scripture encourages us to put on the whole armor of God to withstand in the evil day.
Psalm 94:20 warns that wicked people devise evil by a law. In other words, they force their agenda through the courts.
Let’s remember that when it is time to vote, we can cloud our discernment, and choose an anti-God platform if we are distracted by someone’s personality rather than focusing on the issues at hand.
Seek the Holy Spirit in all things before we endorse any person or idea, being sure it is good by God’s standard. We need to study and know God’s Word more than ever to recognize truth from lies, and good from evil.
And before you hit that “like” button…be certain you are not lending your support to something that is actually rooted in evil.
