God Doesn’t Cause Confusion

One of the most difficult aspects of hell to describe is the utter confusion. Because we are all created by a God of order, reason, sense, and peace, its difficult to relate to a world of chaos without any order whatsoever. The Greek word for confusion means, “rebellion, disorder, riot, turmoil, commotions, anarchy.”

The Hebrew word includes the meaning of shame, disgrace, and reproach. In the American Heritage Dictionary, confusion is described as “disorder, to be perplexed, bewildered, to assemble without order or sense; including mental and emotional disturbances.”

1 Corinthians 14:33 says clearly that God is NOT the author of confusion. If we are experiencing any confusion we want to eliminate it. Most of us desire order in our lives. We actually feel better after activities such as cleaning a room, putting household items away where they belong, or organizing our office. Having order in our life brings a sense of stability and calm. To be in a state of confusion is exhausting, frustrating, depressing, and emotionally disturbing.

People enjoy logical reasoning, clarity of thought, and order here on the earth because Psalms 33:5 says the earth is full of the goodness of the Lord. Whether you realize it or not, order comes only from God. No good thing exists apart from God.

Hell has many horrible aspects, but confusion is something that is agitating and emotionally draining. It’s more than a person can endure. Yet, this mental and emotional torment continues forever. These Bible verses about confusion are in reference to hell:

  • Jeremiah 20:11, “Their everlasting confusion will never be forgotten.”
  • Jeremiah 3:23, “We lie down in our shame, and our confusion covers us.”
  • Job 10:21-22, “I leave for the land of darkness and the shadow of death, never to return— a land as dark as midnight, a land of the shadow of death where only confusion reigns and where the brightest light is dark as midnight.” The King James Version says without any order.

When God gave me the vision of hell that I wrote about in my book, 23 Minutes in Hell, I experienced something I had no idea would be so upsetting. The confusion in hell is absolute and total madness yet a people are still in their right mind, as was the rich man in Luke 16. All the evil, chaos, suffering, terror, darkness and agonizing screams add to the disorder. It is worse than your worst nightmare.

Confusion doesn’t only exist in hell but here in life also. Here are three reasons why some people experience confusion on the earth:

The first reason is idolatry. If people don’t worship and fear God, they will worship and trust in something else. An idol can be self, another person, fame, money, power, or any false god or religious belief. This invites demons to influence and confuse a person’s mind.

  • Isaiah 45:16, “They shall go in confusion together, Who are makers of idols.”
  • Isaiah 41:29, “Their molded images are wind and confusion.”
  • Jeremiah 50:38, “They are insane with their idols.”

In Acts 19, the people of Ephesus and Asia all worshiped the god “Diana.” They heard how Paul was persuading many people away from this pagan god. Paul had stirred it up when he said in verse 26, there are no gods, which are made with hands. With that one statement, the people were full of wrath towards Paul. Verse 29 says the whole city was filled with confusion. The people refused to hear his defense or listen to a word. People who worship false gods will not hear anyone who disagrees with their belief. They actually screamed out for two hours so he couldn’t speak!

Today, we experience this when individuals with biblical values are censored and not permitted to speak. It’s the same devil that still promotes lies and confusion today. The devil deceives people with many false religions, philosophies and false beliefs. The Bible says those who follow false gods become dumb like their gods.

  • 1 Corinthians 12:2 ”…you were carried away to these dumb idols, even as you were led.”
  • Habakkuk 2:18, “dumb idols.” Idolatry is a sin and sin brings deception, and deception leaves people confused.

The second reason people are confused is rejection of God and His Word. Romans 1:21-22 explains that they knew God but they wouldn’t worship Him as God or even give Him thanks. They began to think up foolish ideas of what God was like. As a result, their minds became dark and confused. Claiming to be wise, they instead became utter fools. God will eventually give those who repeatedly reject Him and His Word over to a reprobate mind (Romans1:28).

In the Vine’s Dictionary “reprobate” means, “Not standing the test…a mind of which God cannot approve, and which must be rejected by Him…men whose moral sense is perverted and whose minds are beclouded (or confused) with their own speculations.” God says they are without understanding (Romans 1:31) therefore full of confusion.

  • Ecclesiastes 9:3, “Truly the hearts of the sons of men are full of evil; madness is in their hearts while they live.”
  • Deuteronomy 28:28, The Lord shall smite thee with madness, and blindness,
  • James 3:15-16, “For where envying and strife is, there is confusion and every evil work.” (This verse is addressing Christians).

The third reason for confusion is feeding on lies and fear. Throughout the scriptures, Jesus warns us do not fear and He warns repeatedly saying, do not be deceived. Yet, every day there are thousands of Christians who live in fear, listen to lies, and feed on a watered down Gospel rather than God’s truth. This leads to confusion, and making wrong choices. These poor decisions will bring harm, loss or destruction into our lives.

The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of Truth. He will guide us into all truth if we take the time to listen to Him. He speaks to us as we read the Bible and from within our spirit. He leads us through peace. God is not confused. He is a God of order.

  • Psalms 119:133, “Order my steps in thy word: and let not any iniquity have dominion over me.”
  • Palms 37:23, “The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord.”

Confusion is an enemy. It is demonic, and it is one of the many horrible aspects of hell. Since confusion is so prevalent in our society, the only way to escape it is by repenting of sin, asking God for forgiveness, receiving Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, and surrendering your life to Him.
