Don’t Be That Guy

I want to share with you an experience I had recently. Ten years ago I was at a church, and at the book table, a man came up and said, “Bill, I gave my heart to Jesus. I came forth in the altar call that you gave and I just want to thank you that I’ve committed my life to Jesus Christ.” I said, “Great,” and hugged him.

Ten years later, now, this is just a month ago, he found my phone number and called. He said, “Bill, I just want to let you know that I’ve been going to a church ever since I met you, but my pastor says you’re a complete heretic. What you teach, and your vision is all a lie because there is no hell. And the scriptures that are in the Bible are actually lies.”

I said, “How can you possibly believe that? There are so many scriptures about hell.” And then he went on to say, “Actually, Jesus lied and put those scriptures in there so at the end, when we get to heaven, we won’t be sad that there are people in hell. We’ll find out that everybody goes to heaven. Nobody goes to hell because there is no hell.” This is what he said. I said, “Your pastor teaches this? That’s not biblical at all. Why would you believe this?” I went on to explain, “Eight times the scripture says the eternal one cannot lie. Jesus cannot lie.” And he said, “No, but Jesus lied right then when he said that.” I said, “Well, that’s ridiculous then. You can’t believe anything that the Bible would say if you’re going to take that stand.”

Jesus cannot lie. Jesus Himself talked about hell in 46 bible verses, and there are 250 verses about hell all together in the Bible. God warned us that there really is a hell. And when we get to heaven, we’re not going to be sad that there are people in hell. It is sad that they have to go there, but they will not be on our mind. We won’t be depressed in heaven because there are people that didn’t make it. There are many people that are not going to make it to heaven.

Jesus said in Matthew 7, “Why does the gate that leads to destruction and many go there and narrow is the gate that leads to eternal life and few make it.” I went on to tell him, “few are going to go to heaven. So you need to change that church. If you’re going to that church, that’s completely wrong. Your pastor is scripturally wrong.”

I talked to him for 45 more minutes and gave him Scripture, but he would not listen. He did not value the word of God. I tried my best to convince him to get out of that church, and stick to the Bible. I told him not believe what that pastor is teaching. Well, anyway, the next day he texted me back and just said, “So Bill, am I going to hell?” I said, “If you believe that everybody goes to heaven, then there was no need for Jesus because everybody goes to heaven according to you. That’s not the gospel. You’re preaching a false gospel.”

As Paul said, “If we preach any other gospel, let that man be accursed.” I pleaded with him to get away from that teaching, and to please, read the Bible!.

The bottom line is we all need to value the word of God above our opinion or anything anybody else says. It’s clear in the Word. God made Himself clear. Jesus was abundantly clear. There’s a real hell. It’s horrible. He doesn’t want you to go there and He died on the cross to keep you out. What more would you want Him to do?

Do not fall for unbiblical teaching. Do not believe someone who teaches their opinion instead of the word of God. Do not be that guy.
