Bodies Will Not Burn Up In Hell
1 Corinthians 15:44 says there is a natural body and there is a spiritual body. The spirit body that a person is equipped with in hell has different limitations and endurance capabilities. This would be similar to the burning bush, where the bush was not consumed.
Exodus 3:2, And the Angel of the Lord appeared to him in a flame of fire from the midst of a bush. So he looked, and behold, the bush was burning with fire, but the bush was not consumed.
Matthew 10:28, “Fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell. This verse points out that there is a body in hell.
Proverbs 1:12, “Let us swallow them up alive like Sheol, and whole, like those who go down to the Pit.”
Matthew Henry’s Commentary pg. 1663, 1681 reads, “Hell is the destruction of both soul and body, not of the being of either, but the well being of both, it is the ruin of the whole man…Hell is a furnace of fire kindled by the wrath of God, and kept burning by the bundles of tares cast into it, who will be ever in the consuming, but never consumed.”
Romans 9:22 could possibly be a verse that explains this: What if God, wanting to show His wrath and to make His power known, endured with much longsuffering the vessels of wrath prepared for destruction?
This mentions a vessel or “human being” according to Vine’s, being prepared for destruction, or hell. This may indicate that the body for hell has been is prepared. In addition, the fire itself is prepared.
Matthew 25:41, “Depart from me ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels.”
Not only hell is prepared, which means “make ready,” but the fire is also prepared.
This next verse also gives us a hint that the body is prepared:
Mark 9:47-48, “And if your eye causes you to sin, pluck it out. It is better for you to enter the kingdom of God with one eye, rather than having two eyes, to be cast into hell fire—where their worm does not die And the fire is not quenched. For everyone will be seasoned with fire, and every sacrifice will be seasoned with salt.”
Could this indicate that since salt is a preservative; the body in hell is preserved?
Believer’s Bible Commentary pg. 1345 reads, “Salt typifies that which preserves, purifies, and seasons…If everyone means the unsaved, then the thought is that they will be preserved in the fires of hell, that they will suffer eternal punishment.”
In Luke 16:24, Jesus told us us about the rich man in hell. The rich man asked Abraham to have “Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame.” This man had a tongue and he thirsted. He had eyes, and a mouth with which he spoke. He felt the torment of the flame, yet he wasn’t consumed. In addition, he recognized Abraham and Lazarus, so they must have had spirit bodies to be seen and recognizable. The spirit bodies they all had must have looked similar to the physical body.
In Ezekiel 32:21-29 it says, “The strong among the mighty shall speak to him out of the midst of hell…they have laid their swords under their heads, but their iniquities shall be upon their bones…with them that go down to the pit.”
They could speak, and it mentions their heads and bones, so they must have a body of some kind.
Isaiah 14:9-10 states that those in hell could speak, and experienced weakness, and met those entering hell. They must have had a body of some kind to be seen. Jesus also protected the three Hebrew boys in the fiery furnace. Their bodies were unaffected by the flames.
In the vision God gave me about hell, my body appeared the same as the one I have now. I need to point out that I do not know if the body I had in my vision was the same as someone’s body in hell. I was there in my spirit body. I was not condemned to hell. However, my body looked similar and felt pain. To sum it up, the body in hell could be preserved, or the fire could have been prepared, like the burning bush not being consumed.
The Bible does record many supernatural occurrences and miracles, some of which are:
- How did God reverse the direction of the sundial 10 degrees, as He did in Isaiah 38:8?
- Or how did He stop the rotation of the earth for the span of about a whole day as He did in Joshua 10:13?
- How did He preserve Jonah in the belly a great fish preserving him in its belly for three days in Jonah 1:17?
- How could He stop a river from flowing downstream, and prevent it from overflowing around those who crossed it in Joshua 4:23?
- How He will turn all the water on the whole earth to blood during the Tribulation in Revelation 16:6…just as He turned the river into blood in Egypt in Exodus 7:20?
We are extremely limited in our knowledge, and our minds cannot even fathom the depth and knowledge of an Almighty, infinitely powerful, eternal God.
If God can prepare for us such a glorious heavenly body, He certainly does not have a problem preparing a body that will not be consumed by the fires of hell.
