Are You Good Enough To Go To Heaven?

Are you good enough to go to heaven? Most people think so. Yet people rarely consider by whose standard they are considered “good.”

People’s standards vary greatly, and they often compare themselves to other humans. There is only one true standard of goodness, and that is God’s. His standard demands absolute perfection in our thoughts, motives, words, and actions. This perfection would be required if we hoped to enter heaven without trusting in Jesus Christ for our salvation.

James 2:10 says that if we break even one of God’s laws, just once in our lifetime, we are guilty of all. If we lie once, steal once, have one lustful thought, curse once, hold unforgiveness or a grudge, speak negatively about someone, find fault, judge and condemn another, exaggerate, complain, or even entertain one foolish thought in our entire life, it would exclude us from heaven. That is a very high standard.

Romans 3:10–23 says: “There is none righteous, no, not one; there is none who understands; there is none who seeks after God. They have all turned aside; they have together become unprofitable; there is none who does good, no, not one. Their throat is an open tomb; with their tongues they have practiced deceit; the poison of asps is under their lips; whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness. Their feet are swift to shed blood; destruction and misery are in their ways; and the way of peace they have not known. There is no fear of God before their eyes… for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.”

Job 15:16 says, “How much less man, who is abominable and filthy, who drinks iniquity like water!”

Isaiah 64:6 says, “But we are all like an unclean thing, and all our righteousness is like filthy rags.”

Psalm 143:2 says, “For in Your sight no one living is righteous.”

Mark 10:18 says, “So Jesus said to him, ‘Why do you call Me good? No one is good but One, that is, God.’”

Jesus, of course, is good and did not deny that fact. He said this to provoke the man to consider whether he was willing to confess Jesus as God. Apparently, he was not.

It takes humility to go to heaven. It requires trusting in the only Savior and true God—Jesus Christ. False religion, man-made philosophies, and idols cannot save you. We must trust in what Jesus did for us on the cross. He alone took our sin upon Himself because our sin separates us from God. His blood was shed so that we could turn to Him and receive His forgiveness. We must choose to confess Jesus as Lord and Savior. Then He gives us His righteousness, and that alone makes us good enough to enter heaven.
