A Final Opportunity
More than any other time of the year, the Christmas season may present an opportunity to share the message of Jesus Christ with someone. While we don’t always know how or when it will happen, we must be available, sensitive and obedient to the Holy Spirit’s leading. In this video, Bill shares a time when he felt deeply prompted by the Holy Spirit to boldly share about his faith and hope in Christ.
“Some years ago, I was contacted by a woman who wanted to interview me to list her home for sale. During the interview she said, “Listen, I know you’re a Christian and I don’t want to hear that Bible mentioned to me. Don’t you preach to me. Don’t talk to me about it. I think it’s a fairy tale and it’s garbage.”
She was an elderly woman, and she actually looked very ill to me. She didn’t look well at all. Something rose up in my heart and I thought, “No, I’m going to tell her about the gospel today.” Normally, we don’t want to preach to someone or push the Gospel on anyone who asks us not to. But we also have to be sensitive to the Holy Ghost. I was in that sensitive state, and I felt very strongly I needed to share with her that day. I said, “You’re going to listen. I don’t care if I get the listing or not. I’m going to tell you the truth because you’ve probably been this pushy lady all your life and never really heard the gospel. You probably don’t even know what it is. But you’re going to hear it now.”
She pushed back and asked me to leave her house but I said, “No, I’m not leaving. I’m telling you the truth about the gospel.” The boldness came over me just like that.
I spoke to her for an hour and a half. I explained everything to her about salvation. I told her that God loves her, He doesn’t want her to go to hell and He’s given His life for her on the cross. After all that her response was, “I’m not interested. I don’t want to hear it. I don’t care about it.” After everything I shared, she didn’t even bend or give in a little bit. The last thing she said was, “You Christians think you’re better than the rest of us.”
I prayed for a second and God gave me this: I said, “There were two men on a plane. One man had a parachute, the other one didn’t. The plane was going to go down in moments. The man with the parachute was no better than the man without, he was just better off. You’re getting ready to jump into eternity and you don’t have the parachute of Jesus Christ as your Savior. The fall that man will have without the parachute will be bad, but your fall will be far greater because you don’t realize that hell is eternal. You will be in torment for all eternity because you chose to reject the gospel. It will be your fault if you go there.”
Her reply was, “I don’t care. I don’t want to hear it. Just sell my house and get out of here.” She hired me to list her home in spite of the conversation we had!
I went home and the next day I found out that she had died the night before. I knew then, it was why God had told me to be so firm with her. The Holy Spirit had caused me to be sensitive to the Lord’s leading.
God gave that woman an opportunity to hear the truth and receive Salvation right up until her last breath. What incredible mercy God showed to her! I don’t know whether she accepted the Lord or not. I do know that she can’t stand before God and say, “I didn’t know the way.”
If we pray each day and make ourselves available to God, then He will move on your heart. He will instruct us how to handle each person and situation differently. Not everyone will respond in the same way but we must be sensitive to the Holy Ghost. We must really watch, listen and respond to what God is telling us to do. It may be the final opportunity we have to share the gospel, and the final opportunity someone will have to hear it.”
