9 Torments That Exist In Hell
I will share nine torments that exist in hell. These are the things a person will experience in hell immediately after they die, if they die without Christ. It is far worse than you can imagine. People truly have no idea what it means to exist forever apart from God. God is life, so without Him, there remains only death, decay, pain, and misery.
- Fire
Jesus mentioned the fires of hell in 17 verses. It is referenced 12 other times in the New Testament, and there are many additional references in the Old Testament. Here are five statements spoken by Jesus:
Matthew 13:50 – “And shall cast them into the furnace of fire: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth.”
Matthew 25:41 – “Depart from Me, you cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels.”
Mark 9:47–48 – “And if your eye causes you to sin, pluck it out. It is better for you to enter the kingdom of God with one eye than, having two eyes, to be cast into hell fire—where their worm does not die and the fire is not quenched.”
Luke 16:23 – Jesus describes a certain rich man in hell: “And in hell he lifted up his eyes, being in torments… And he cried and said, ‘Have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame.’”
John 15:6 – “If anyone does not abide in Me, he is cast out as a branch and is withered; and they gather them and throw them into the fire, and they are burned.”
It is clear that the fire is not allegorical, but literal.
- Prison Cells
Isaiah 24:22 – “They shall be gathered together, as prisoners are gathered in the pit, and shall be shut up in the prison.”
Proverbs 7:27 – “Her house is the way to hell, descending to the chambers of death.” (“Chambers” means inner rooms.)
Job 17:16 – “They shall go down to the bars of the pit.”
Jonah 2:6 – “The earth with its bars closed behind me forever.” - Maggots
Here are four verses describing maggots in hell:
Isaiah 14:11 – “The maggot is spread under you, and worms cover you.” (“Rimmah” means maggot.)
Job 24:19–20 – “As drought and heat consume the snow waters, so Sheol consumes those who have sinned… The worm feeds sweetly on him.” (“Worm” here also refers to maggots.)
Isaiah 66:24 – “Their worm does not die, and their fire is not quenched.” (“Tola” means worm or maggot.)
Mark 9:43–44 – “Where their worm does not die and the fire is not quenched.” (“Skolex” refers to a worm that feeds on dead bodies.)
- Torment
In Luke 16:23, regarding the rich man in hell, Jesus used the words “torments” and “tormented,” each word twice. These come from words meaning severe pain, torture, grief, and agony.
The rich man was in torment in the fire and experienced extreme thirst. There are many other torments as well: no strength, no sleep, no purpose, isolation, loneliness, confusion, no peace, total darkness, fear, terror, and utter hopelessness.
Lamentations 3:6 – “He has set me in dark places like those who have long been dead.”
Psalm 73:18–19 – “They are utterly consumed with terrors.”
Isaiah 45:16 – “They shall go to confusion together.”
Isaiah 38:18 – “Those who go down to the pit cannot hope for Your truth.”
(See also Isaiah 14:9–10; Psalm 88:4, 8, 18; Isaiah 57:21; Jude 7, 13; Ecclesiastes 9:10.)
- Evil Spirits and Demons
Demons are described as tormenting people:
Matthew 18:34 – “Deliver him to the tormentors.”
Matthew 24:51 – “He will cut him in pieces…”
Job 33:22 – “His soul draws near to the pit, and his life to the destroyers.”
Luke 12:47 – “He shall be beaten with many stripes.”
Luke 19:27 – “Bring my enemies here and slay them before me.”
Psalm 78:49 – “He cast upon them the fierceness of His anger… by sending evil angels among them.”
These passages raise the question of who carries out the torment, destruction, and punishment. The implication is demonic beings.
Isaiah 14:12–15 speaks of Lucifer being cast down to Sheol along with his fallen angels.
- Foul, Putrid Odors
Mark 9:25 – Jesus rebuked foul spirits.
Isaiah 34:3 – “Their stench shall rise from their corpses.”
Isaiah 66:24 – describes decaying bodies and undying worms.
Rotting corpses would produce a terrible odor. Jesus also used the word “Gehenna” when referring to hell. Gehenna was the garbage dump outside the city of Jerusalem, known for its foul odors from burning waste, decaying bodies, and maggots.
- Wailing and Screaming
Matthew 13:50 – “Wailing and gnashing of teeth.”
Isaiah 57:21 – “There is no peace,” says my God, “for the wicked.”
Wailing means loud crying and lamenting. With countless people in torment, there would be continuous screaming and no rest or quiet.
Isaiah 32:18 describes peace and quiet as belonging to God’s people—something absent in hell.
- Desolation
Isaiah 59:10 – “We are like dead men in desolate places.”
Hell is described as completely barren, with no life of any kind.
Ezekiel 26:20 – speaks of “desolate places of old.”
Acts 1:20 – “Let his habitation be desolate.” (“Eremos” means deserted, remote, wilderness.)
Isaiah 34:9–10 – describes a land that becomes burning pitch.
Hell is portrayed as a wasteland—dry, ruined, forsaken, parched, and decayed.
- Low Oxygen
Isaiah 42:5 – “God, who gives breath to the people upon it.”
These next verses refer to physical life, but they suggest that breath comes from God and ends at death:
Job 14:10 – “Man dies and is laid away; indeed, he breathes his last.”
Psalm 78:39 – “A breath that passes away and does not come again.”
Psalm 104:29 – “You take away their breath, they die and return to their dust.”
During the “23 Minutes in Hell” vision I experienced, it was extremely difficult to breathe—similar to an asthma patient or a firefighter in a blaze, unable to get enough oxygen and feeling as though you might suffocate at any moment.
Any one of these aspects of hell is far worse than the human mind can comprehend. It is a place to be avoided at all costs.
