21 Ways Jesus Described Hell
Jesus painted a vivid picture of hell, and He made all of us aware of its horror. He did not hide it, He did not sugarcoat it, and He did not apologize for it. He simply stated it as fact. He described hell with 21 different phrases. He said hell is a place of:
Everlasting fire — Matthew 25:41; Matthew 18:8
Everlasting punishment — Matthew 25:46
Everlasting damnation — Matthew 23:14, 33; Mark 3:29; Mark 12:40; Luke 20:47; John 5:29
Many are going to destruction — Matthew 7:13
Cast both soul and body into hell — Matthew 10:28; Matthew 11:23; Matthew 18:9; Luke 10:15; Luke 12:4–5
Thrust down to hell — Luke 10:15
Tormented in the flame — Luke 16:23
Weeping and gnashing of teeth — Matthew 8:12; Matthew 13:42, 50; Matthew 24:51; Matthew 25:30
Cast into a furnace of fire — Matthew 13:42, 50
Where their worm does not die — Mark 9:44–48
Where the fire is not quenched — Mark 9:44–48
Bind them in bundles and burn them — Matthew 13:30
Burned in the fire — Matthew 13:40; John 15:6
Bind him hand and foot — Matthew 22:13
Take him away — Matthew 22:13
Cast him into outer darkness — Matthew 8:12; Matthew 22:13; Matthew 25:30
Slay My enemies — Luke 19:27
Cut him in pieces — Matthew 24:51; Luke 12:46
Beaten with many stripes — Luke 12:47
Deliver him to the tormentors — Matthew 18:34
“How can ye escape the damnation of hell?” — Matthew 23:33
How is that for sweet Jesus?
Now God is loving, forgiving, and more merciful than we can possibly fathom. However, He is equally just, holy, infinitely powerful, and the Almighty God, Creator of the universe.
Jesus does not pull any punches. He even said that if your eye causes you to sin, pluck it out rather than enter hell. That is a pretty graphic and severe statement. This is how serious it is to avoid hell. He gave us ample warning.
Hell is a place absent from all good. The good we all enjoy in this life is not here because of Mother Nature. It is only here because of Father God. All good comes only from Him, as James 1:17 states. If you want nothing to do with God, then there is a place prepared that has nothing to do with Him.
Jesus said that the only way to stay out of hell is to repent of our sin and receive Him as our Lord and Savior. He said in John 14:6 that He is the only way to heaven. If you want to believe that Jesus was lying, crazy, or did not really say these things, then you are taking the biggest gamble of your life.
Your most valuable asset is your eternal soul.
You decide.
