The Way Back

Bill Wiese

Pilate was talking with Jesus just before he was pressured into condemning Him to death. Jesus told him that His kingdom was not of this world. Pilate asked Him if He was a king. Jesus said He was, and He continued, “To this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. Every one that is of the truth hears my voice. Pilate said to him, “What is truth?” And when he had said this, he went out again unto the Jews, and said to them, I find in him no fault at all” (John 18:37–38). Pilate knew how elusive truth was, but he must have believed Jesus was, in fact, telling him the truth. His question about truth was cynical, yet he sensed that Jesus was honest and spoke the truth.

Jesus said in John 14:6: “I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.” He clearly declares that He IS the truth and therefore what He has said IS true. The Bible clearly defines truth. Truth doesn’t change. Truth is not relative. Truth is not comprised of emotions or beliefs. Truth is not an opinion.

Sadly, it has become commonplace for people to lie or cover up the truth. We identify those who get ahead using dishonest tactics as clever or shrewd. We are skeptical if we purchase a home or car, hire someone to perform a service or accept help from a stranger because so many people don’t operate in truth.

While the unbelieving world lacks a compass for truth, what is the excuse of the believer? Many believers have succumbed to fear over faith, greed over generosity, pride over humility. If God’s Word is not the governing truth over our lives, than we have fallen for a counterfeit.

Consider what the Bible warns when we ignore, reject and lack knowledge of the truth:

  • Deceive ourselves – 1 John 1:6-8, James 1:22, Gal. 5:7,8
  • Inability to discern truth from deception – 1 John 4:6, 1 John 2:21, Is. 5:20
  • Lose credibility as a Christ follower – 1 John 3:18,19, John 3:21
  • Stray from the truth – James 5:19, Titus 1:14
  • Lead others away from the truth – 2 Peter 2:2, 2 Cor. 13:8
  • Inability to hear from God – John 18:37, John 16:13
  • Live without true freedom – John 8:32, Gal. 5:1
  • Lose confidence of salvation – Titus 1:1,2, Heb. 5:9, 1 John 2:3

Social media, celebrities and politicians will never be the source of truth. The Psalmist declares, “Thy law is truth” and “all thy commandments are truth” (Ps. 119:142, 151). We must realize that God and His Word are one (John 1:1; Psalm 138:2) and the Word of God is our plumb line. As one writer puts it, “Man doesn’t call a line crooked unless he has some idea of a straight line.” God has defined truth for our lives. If we have derailed from that path in any way, He has already shown us how to find our way back.
