Share Your Faith
Over the years, I have traveled on many planes sitting beside many different people. These are some of the best opportunities for sharing our faith. Usually, I will strike up a conversation with the person next to me by asking them questions such as what they do for a living, are they traveling for business or pleasure, etc. I listen and continue to show an interest in them. They in turn usually begin to ask me questions.
When asked what I do, I say something like, “I teach the Bible.” They usually ask, “What do you teach on?” I answer, “Heaven and hell – Who goes there and why.” That really opens up the conversation! I only share very small bits of information at a time and then I am quiet allowing them time to think and respond. I never preach. I only share. Oftentimes I’ll ask them, “Do you have a spiritual background?” Most of the time, they will respond and share about themselves, giving me the opportunity to ask more questions. If there is a point in the conversation where they don’t want to engage any further, I am always respectful and move on from the subject.
God is not saying we are expected to witness to every person we see. However, we should be careful to obey God when He directs us to a certain individual. If we don’t obey, I believe Scripture is clear that God will hold us partially accountable (Ez. 33:8; Acts 18:6, 20:26-27). We will not lose our salvation, but we will lose our reward and feel shame on that day. In His mercy, He will wipe away every tear, and that is what some of our tears will be caused by (Rev. 21:4). It is a very sobering thought and we should take it seriously. Our job is to be a witness of Jesus Christ (Mark 16:15). Most of our witness is through our life example, but we should also seek every opportunity to share the Word of God with others. It is a wonderful privilege to be entrusted with the gospel, but it is also a very serious responsibility.
First Thessalonians 2:4 tells us: “But as we have been approved by God to be entrusted with the gospel, even so we speak, not as pleasing men, but God who tests our hearts.”
