What is The Kingdom Of God?

What does the Bible mean by stating we are to seek the kingdom of God? What does the kingdom consist of?

The Kingdom of God, also referred to as the Kingdom of Heaven, includes sharing the gospel or good news about salvation through Jesus Christ. The primary verse is 1 Corinthians 15:3-4 which says, “That Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day according to the Scriptures.”

The gospels recorded the good news that Jesus preached and demonstrated, which also includes physical and mental healing, deliverance from demons, provision, protection, and eternal life.

The main point of the preaching of the Gospel is to show man the way of salvation and entrance into heaven. Matthew 7:21 states, “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven.”

In John 3:5 Jesus answered, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.”

We also are told that repentance is a requirement for salvation.

Mark 1:15 reads, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the gospel.”

In Matthew 4:17 Jesus said, “Repent for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”

We see that the kingdom of God, the good news, involves deliverance from demons.

Luke 11:20, “But if I cast out demons with the finger of God, surely the kingdom of God has come upon you.”

Christians are instructed to share the word of God with others.

In Mark 4:26 Jesus said, “The kingdom of God is as if a man should scatter seed on the ground.” (The seed is God’s word and the ground is the human heart).

This next verse is also part of the Kingdom.

In Mark 9:1 Jesus said, “Assuredly, I say to you that there are some standing here who will not taste death till they see the kingdom of God present with power.”

Some of the apostles saw Jesus transformed into His glory and power and royal splendor. Therefore, the kingdom of God is also seeing Jesus in all His glory. This will occur once we are in heaven.

We also see that the kingdom of God includes children.

Mark 10:14 “Let the little children come to Me, and do not forbid them; for of such is the kingdom of God.”

In Luke 9:2 we see the kingdom includes healing the sick.

And in Luke 17:21 the kingdom of God is within those who trust in Jesus as their Lord and Savior, because the Holy Spirit dwells in us. We are so blessed to have the Holy Spirit living in us. This could not occur in the Old Testament. The Holy Spirit only rested upon the prophets at that time.

Romans 14:17 tells us what the kingdom is; “For the kingdom of God is not eating and drinking, but righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit.”

The kingdom is salvation, peace of mind, and joy regardless of our circumstances.

Then in 1 Corinthians 4:20 it states, “For the kingdom of God is not in word but in power.”

Jesus Christ has given us the Holy Spirit to work in and through us to help others. We can experience God’s presence and see Him transform lives. We can see miracles, healing, deliverance, provision, and freedom from sin through the power of the Holy Spirit who now dwells in us. In addition, Jesus has given us authority over the devil (Luke 10:19).

Jesus summed up His mission in this next verse:

Luke 4:18 “The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me. Because He has anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted;
to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind; to set at liberty those who are oppressed;
to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord.”

This is the good news Jesus has provided!

He has entrusted His people to continue proclaiming the good news of the Kingdom of God by demonstrating His love and compassion to a lost and dying world. Hebrews 12:28-29 reads, “Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom which cannot be shaken, let us have grace, by which we may serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear. For our God is a consuming fire.”

In Matthew 6:33, Jesus said, “But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.”

Jesus is telling us that if we put Him and His Kingdom first, we will have everything we need.
