The Other Side of Jesus

The Other Side of Jesus

Paul said in Acts 20:27, “I have not shunned to declare unto you all the counsel of God.”

Today, many like to emphasize the love, grace and mercy of Jesus, and that should be preached and praised because God is love and His love is abundant and overwhelming! However, it’s not mentioned often of His holiness, His truth and His judgment. He’s not only a God of love but a God that hates sin and warns us of the consequences for those who practice sin or have a lifestyle of sin. He gives a very clear description of a place of eternal torment. He also warns Christians the danger of entertaining sin and not obeying His Word. In Mark 9:47, Jesus was talking to His disciples when He said, “And if thine eye offend thee, pluck it out. It’s better for thee to enter into the kingdom of God with one eye than having two eyes to cast into hellfire where their worm dies not and the fire is not quenched.” The word offend means causes you to sin.

Jesus is warning those who practice sin where they will end up. This is the other side of Jesus that many do not want to hear. Scripture should cause us to be more thankful for what He saved us from, have a reverential fear of all mighty God and give us an increased passion for the lost. Some of the following verses are directed at the unbeliever in general, some are to the unbelieving religious leaders, and some are to the believers:

  • Jesus said in Matthew 17:17, “Oh faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you?” Jesus was perturbed with His disciples for their lack of faith.
  • In Matthew 16:22, when Jesus mentioned that He had to die and go to the cross, Peter rebuked Him and said, “This shall not happen to you.” But Jesus responded with, “Get behind me, Satan. You are an offense to me, for you are not mindful of the things of God, but the things of man.” Jesus expected Peter to know that He had to go to the cross and Peter didn’t know it so He rebuked him.
  • Matthew 18:6, “But whosoever shall offend one of these little ones which believe in me, it were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck and then he were drowned in the depths of the sea.”
  • Luke 12:47, “And that servant, which knew his lord’s will and prepared not himself, neither did according to his will shall be beaten with many stripes.”
  • Matthew 10:37, “He that loves father and mother more than me is not worthy of me and he that takes not up his cross and follows after me is not worthy of me.”
  • In Luke 12:4-5, Jesus said, “Do not fear him who after he has killed the body, has no more that he can do. But rather fear him who after he has killed, has power to cast into Hell.”
  • In Matthew 21:44, Jesus said, “This stone on whomsoever it shall fall will grind him to powder.” Jesus is that stone and He’s talking about those who put themselves in opposition to Christ.
  • In Matthew 22:13, He said, “Bind him hand and foot and take him away and cast him into outer darkness where there shall be weeping and gashing of teeth.” This was a man that didn’t have a wedding garment on.
  • Luke 19:27, “But those mine enemies, which would not that I should reign over them, bring them hither, and slay them before me.” That was the man that hid his talent.
  • In Matthew 18:34, Jesus said, “And the lord was wroth, and delivered him to the tormentors.” This was the man that would not forgive when he was forgiven much.
  • Matthew 13:49, “The angels shall sever the wicked from among the just and cast them into a furnace of fire. There shall be wailing and gashing of teeth.”
  • Matthew 24:51, “And he shall cut him in pieces, and appoint him his portion with the hypocrites. There shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth.” That was to the servant who said the Lord delays His coming.
  • Matthew 25:30, “And cast ye the unprofitable servant into outer darkness: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth.”
  • Matthew 25:41, He said, “Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels.” He was talking to the people who didn’t feed the poor, who didn’t visit the sick or visit the people that were in prison. Those things don’t get you into Heaven, but they should be actions that a Christian displays and these people did not.
  • Matthew 25:46, “And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into everlasting life.”
  • Luke 13:34, Jesus said, “Strive to enter in at the straight gate, for many I say unto you will seek to enter in and shall not be able and then he will say to them, ‘Depart from me, all you workers of iniquity. There shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth when you shall see Abraham, Isaac and Jacob and all the prophets enter into the kingdom and you yourselves thrust out.”
  • Luke 16:23, “And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torment, and said I am tormented in this flame.” Jesus was talking about the rich man in Hell that was burning in the fire.”
  • In John 15:6, Jesus said, “If a man abides not in me, he is cast forth as a branch; and men gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned.”
  • In Matthew 23:14,27, Jesus said, “ Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you devour widows’ houses, and for a pretense make long prayers. Therefore you will receive greater condemnation. Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs, which indeed appear beautiful outwardly, but inside are full of dead men’s bones and all uncleanness.

These are strong verses. Because God loves us, He warns us. That is the reason for these strong statements Jesus makes. Let’s not pick and choose what we want to hear from God’s word. May we be bold enough to stand up for the truth and not compromise. Let us embrace the full scope of who Jesus is and embrace ALL of His Word. Paul said in 1 Thessalonians 2:2, “We were bold in our God to speak unto you the gospel of God.” We must also make that stand, heed the warnings of Jesus and share all of God’s Word.
